Welcome one and all to Jim's Café, the sanctuary for the long suffering sane from the madness of the modern world.

Another day another cafe, but this one is a little special, because the main topic is Whamageddon! For those of you unfamiliar with this, it is a game you play each year around christmas time, where you attempt to go the entire festive season without hearing the song "Last Christmas" by Wham! I failed last year, but I wont be failing again this year.

The premise is simple, at some point, someone got fed up of never being able to escape "Last Christmas" by Wham during the festive season so laid down the challage to try to avoid hearing it, and here are the (friendly version of) the rules:

The Rules:

1) The moment you recognise the song, you are out, no changing the song and claiming you are still in.
2) You cannot sabotage other people
3) This is only for the version by Wham, covers and singing it to people doesnt count.

4) Whamageddon starts from the first christmas song in shops until the start of Boxing Day (26th December)
5) Extra points for someone who made it past December 31st.
6) To hear the song is to be "Whammed"

As ever, this is a cafe, so there are questions. As ever, answer the tables you like, skip the rest and enjoy:

Whamageddon Table
For those who have played/intend to play
1) Have you ever played Whamageddon?
2) What is your success rate for this game?
3) Are the any songs WORSE than Wham!'s "Last Christmas" that you think should be the object instead?
4) Are going to play this year?
5) For those who are playing, when you get Whammed, come back here and describe how it happened.

Christmas Table
Now that the festive season is ACTUALLY here (and not stupidly early)
1) How many presents are you buying this year?
2) Do you still have presents to buy?
3) What makes it a real Christmas for you?
4) What was your best Christmas?
5) What are your Christmas plans this year?

Art Table
Because December 1st is also "Day Without Art Day"
1) What is your favourite form of Art? (Music/Film/Painting/Sculpture/Writing/Graffiti/Tattoos etc)
2) What Art form would you not miss?
3) What would the world look like if all art were truly gone from it on this day every year?
4) Have you made Art? Share it if you like. :D
5) What does Art mean to you?

The Bar
A quiet place to just say Hi.
1) Say Hello
2) Tell us how you're doing.

Recruitment Table
DONT FORGET TO TAG PEOPLE! And committing to write the next Cafe never hurt anyone irreparably.

1 - Buying a couple of things for my son, maybe a new outer shell/parka for hiking in the cold for myself, that's it. I did send a few cards out to family and friends this year.

2 - Yes

3 - Hmmm...not quite sure I understand the question.

4 - Hard to say, there have been many good ones, some not so great, Recent years, it's been pretty "neutral", i.e., neither good nor bad. I don't really go "all in" as far as celebrating this particular holiday anymore. My son is the only reason I 'observe' it in any fashion.

5 - Minimal...my son will hang out with me for part of that weekend and open a few gifts. Christmas eve I will work (busiest day of the year for us). We close early, so I'll probaby order a big Chinese food feast and queue up some films. Other than that, nada...

5) What does Art mean to you?

1 - Film (as most here are probably aware, ha ha!) and theatre

2 - I don't really consider graffiti to be art, but I'd be more than happy to see it all go away

3 - Pretty drab...

4 - Yes, I've performed in dozens of plays and directed half a dozen others.

5 - Answering this question would require an entire thread of its own...

Christmas Table
Now that the festive season is ACTUALLY here (and not stupidly early)
1) How many presents are you buying this year?

None, but the one present for my nephew was a combination birthday that I got him when he was a child many years ago. and Christmas present and for my great nieces I will make something for them once they decide but woodworking is a hobby of mine.

2) Do you still have presents to buy?

None so far...yet.

3) What makes it a real Christmas for you?

With most of my family being older and getting more so it is watching the above great nieces when I visit them. They are still little munchkins so them having fun is best for me.

4) What was your best Christmas?

Too many to name but Christmas at my grandparents back when they still lived in the little old farmhouse they were in up until I was 10 or so was fun. It was like you see in the old Norman Rockwell pictures complete with going out to cut your own tree. My grandmother was the one that killed and plucked the turkey and dressing was made in a wash tub because there were likely to be 20 or so people showing up.

5) What are your Christmas plans this year?

None so far but never know what will come up.

Art Table
Because December 1st is also "Day Without Art Day"
1) What is your favourite form of Art? (Music/Film/Painting/Sculpture/Writing/Graffiti/Tattoos etc)

Film by far but music is a good one that I always enjoy. I have always also enjoyed reading poetry but I am not one who could decipher the meanings for the life of me.

2) What Art form would you not miss?

Probably any that I look at and ask...why? LOL

3) What would the world look like if all art were truly gone from it on this day every year?

Boring. Because it helps others along in their life and you never know what you may find.

4) Have you made Art? Share it if you like. :D

No artistic ability to be found in me although I am fairly decent with playing the guitar, mandolin and banjo.

5) What does Art mean to you?

Expression.

I guess since I've been tagged I'll say a few things. Mostly in regards to the questions, since I don't even know what song that is, and I don't go out enough to ever hear any songs besides my own.

1) How many presents are you buying this year?

I don't usually buy gifts for people, mostly because I have no friends and my family is pretty... bad. But they're pressuring me to do so, so I'm going to buy them all one thing from the various stops I make in my trucking job and count it as a souvenir. If not for that, I wouldn't be buying anybody anything.

2) Do you still have presents to buy?

Yes. See above.

3) What makes it a real Christmas for you?

When people actually remember that it's more than just rampant consumerism and it's supposed to be about the spirit of generosity and compassion. Too few people seem to remember that though, so I've never had a "real" Christmas.

4) What was your best Christmas?

They've all been equally terrible.

5) What are your Christmas plans this year?

Sleeping all day.

1) What is your favourite form of Art? (Music/Film/Painting/Sculpture/Writing/Graffiti/Tattoos etc)

Music is my pick, because music has the unique ability to transcend cultural and linguistic boundaries. Sure, you might not be able to understand the full meaning of a song in another language, but you can still listen to the melody, to the rhythm, and you can still enjoy it. I have plenty of songs on my playlist from other countries, singing in languages I can't understand, but I still love the sound and the melody.

2) What Art form would you not miss?

Modern art. The whole "art is subjective" argument is silly to me. Even if it is subjective, you splattering paint on a canvas in ten seconds is not art. My rule regarding art is this: if any unskilled passersby can replicate your art with little to no effort, then your art is not good to me.

3) What would the world look like if all art were truly gone from it on this day every year?

I imagine it would look like wearing the special sunglasses from the move They Live where everything is drab and grey and all the signs just have blunt, draconian phrases on them.

4) Have you made Art? Share it if you like. :D

I dabble in writing from time to time, but I don't really feel like sharing it here.

5) What does Art mean to you?

An expression of a person's morals, convictions, ideology, beliefs, feelings, etc... To me, art is meant to teach, to inspire, and to uplift. Art is supposed to make you see the beauty of the world and help share feelings and emotions with others. You listen to a sad song, you feel sad, even if you can't relate perfectly with the song. A painting of a beautiful landscape usually makes you feel calm or relaxed, because even though you're not at a real landscape, you're connecting with what the painting represents. Art should be inspiring and help people connect, in my eyes.
