Well, with the rise of charter schools, the cost for an American to get a PhD is getting to be cost prohibitive. There are a number of charter schools around me. There is one charter school, were pre-K and K cost over $20,000 before your child gets into first grade. The other charter schools, they all cost over $17,000 per-year regardless of the grade your child is in. So, your over $238,000 for a high school education. Plus, the cost to drive your child back and forth to school. Plus, the after school activities. Plus, the traveling educational summer education. If you spent that much capital to get your child an education -- your not sending your child to a community college. If you want your child to get into grad school, so, if your looking at a GPA of 3.95 and higher -- you cannot really be working part-time during your university years. When you become a PhD(c), you might have to spend time in Europe for research. So, the cost keeps pilling up.
Sure, you could have a public education. Sure, you can go to a state university. Sure, you can do all your PhD(c) research within the United States. Sure, you can still get a PhD, but, how good is your PhD when your teaching at a community college, with first year subjects that are transfer to a four year college or university? Or, do you want a PhD and your at Harvard, Brown, Yale, and so on.
