I used to have an entire drawer full of pens that I had collected from various places. This was before tap-to-pay and we had to sign paper credit card receipts. I will almost always stick a pen in my pocket unless I have something blocking me, like when they put a fake flower on the end so that it will not fit. Problem with too many pens is they all dry out and then you have to test 30 goddam ballpoints before you find a working one! OTOH, pen tubes often come in handy for ad-hoc DIY projects around the house/apartment.
My solution was to get a nice, expensive pen. That way I have an incentive to keep track of it, and it would be more likely to actually work when I needed it. I got one that came with a free gel pen on the side and so far I have managed to hold on to both of them. They have a certain place in a holder where I will notice if one goes missing. Another pen I have is a "space pen" I got from a camping goods store. It is pressurized such that it can write upside down, and possibly even underwater. The reason it's called a space pen is that it was developed for use by astronauts in orbit, similar to how we invented Tang drink mix. The pen has been able to work for me even after extended storage so I think it's living up to its promise. I used to have a Kyocera ceramic ballpoint pen, but it got lost unfortunately in between moves.
