It's been about 6 months and I gained weight along with a medicine that makes me gain weight. Yesterday I was stressed after hearing about a $700 mechanic bill and wanted to reach for a cigarette (I have a few I carry in my pocketbook)

I really think this is where the extra weight came from too.
I have no doubt that you can and will do well. Pullin' for ya!

So know that you all may not believe me...but have set April 20th as the day. It is my father's birthday so felt like would be a day of significance of sorts to me. So I have the patches and now to begin the mental preparations and re-read Carr's book over the next week to get me geared up and really motivated. And admit by putting it on here and telling my husband realize I now do have to live up to this goal. So will take any and all advice, encouragement etc etc.

Good for you!

My advice would be to tell as many people as possible, especially any people you're likely to see who also smoke - give them advance warning not to offer you one no matter how much you beg!

I also found having some nicotine replacement, such as gum or lozenges good for when you get those instant cravings.

Good luck! You can do it *hug

I used the Alan Carr book, I just went past 4 years on April fools day :) Good luck.

Anyone else notice their sense of taste get better/more sensitive since quitting? That’s been a surprising but welcome benefit; food tastes better and I’m able to detect more subtle and complex flavors in previously familiar foods.
That's quite a common phenomenom. Smoking can dull the body's sense of taste and smell, probably by having a negative effect on the relevant sensory nerve endings. Giving up the smokes can reverse this so as to restore those senses.
Also, in the first few days of giving smoking, anyone experienced a kind of head rush? That's due to more oxygen binding to the red blood cells instead of the CO from the fags. So that means there's more O2 available to fly around the inside of the head.

Tbh I haven't noticed any of the positive benefits of giving up other than a boost to my bank balance. To a certain extent I actually feel worse as I developed a cough when I gave up last year which has never gone away.

One thing I have noticed though is that I can smell a cigarette from half a mile away and it turns my stomach.

yes when i quit, food did taste and smell better. another thing i noticed is how bad a smokers clothes smell. especially the coat since it isn't washed very often. i can't believe i didn't notice how bad that cigarette smell was on me.

i had that same hacking cough. it's weird because mine started after about 6 months and took about a year to go away a little at a time. when i smell a cigarette i love the smell. and it's good that you quit, it sounds like your body is trying to repair the damage from smoking.

i quit about 3 years 1 month 4 days and 21 minuetes ago, not that i noticed how long it's been. i quit too late that's why i have copd. but i did quit and have no intention of starting again. like @Gonz said sense of taste and smell much better, saving money, and don't smell like i've been sitting close to a campfire. of course the bad thing is weight gain but i'm working on that.

I'll be honest Lucy, I have the same thing going on. I don't have the cough - but I have no real positive effects of not smoking. I don't 'feel better' or anything. It's a boost to my bank balance, I guess, but we also weren't paying as much as you guys are here (!!!). I can also smell a smoke from a distance. The neighbor smokes and I can smell it lying in bed with the window cracked. I can also smell them getting high....
