When I was in the army, I spent all my free time sleeping. And when I wasn't free, I was on duty. I was so exhausted that all I had to do was close my eyes to start napping.

Used to do this when I was younger - stay awake for 36-72 hours and then go to bed, drop asleep immediately and sleep for 12 hours. Scared to try that now lol, since as I've got older have found no matter how exhausted I feel, I can still get slapped with a zero hours night and body will refuse to sleep 😟
I don't think anything bad will happen if you try this experiment again. You can always stop the experiment and go to sleep. After all, that's the whole purpose.

I slept for a while earlier. I really need to stop sleeping during the day I think.
If you sleep all day, then of course you won't sleep at night. But if you sleep for a couple of hours in the afternoon, that's fine. I sleep for a couple of hours in the afternoon if I want to.

11:15pm here at work now . Still got another hour left then its home time. Headache starting. Hope I can get at least 6 hours sleep when I get home.
Take a pill for your headache. Is aspirin available over the counter where you live? Headaches used to keep me awake at night. But since I quit smoking, I don't get headaches as often anymore.

@Gard yeah it's almost like I have nothing to lose at this point. Unfortunately I also have a schedule that means I can't just go to bed at 11 in the morning if that's when the sleep drive decides to take over. Worth thinking about though. There's definitely a psychology at play - I recall that trying to stay awake was the one thing guaranteed to make me sleepy eventually - trying to get to sleep is the one thing guaranteed to keep me awake.

Last night, went to bed about 11.30pm I think it was. Snapped awake at 2am, even worse than the previous nights. Got up and took some l-theanine, valerian, painkillers, and may have got back off for a bit, but was then awake at 5am and after a battle with my mind, got up before 8am to face the day exhausted again.

I wouldn't drink theanine. There's a lot of it in green tea. And green tea usually makes me feel more alert.
Why don’t you drink 200–300 ml of warm milk and eat one sweet roll before bed?
Tryptophan before bed will help you. Although it’s found in milk, you can also take it separately. But I wouldn’t take it, because you might feel sleepy the next day. But give it a try.

Nope. My body just says nope. Another completely hellish night. My body/brain refuses to sleep so I have to drag myself through another day of hell. I have to figure out how to shuffle tomorrow because I cannot get through it in this state and do not expect to sleep tonight. Life keeps on piling on the miles I have to get through while simultaneously sabotaging the vehicle I am trying to travel in. I don't see how I can keep doing this.

I noticed it's even better than coffee to get my brain refreshed and going - in a good way - at midafternoon, and at the same time it gives a calm which is much appreciated. I read it's the GABA which has that effect on the nervous system.
I drink green tea regularly. But I never drink it in the evening because it keeps me awake. It acts as a stimulant for me.

Horrible night. Slipped into sleep for 20 minutes - 3am when I woke up. Nuked with valerian, l-theanine and nytol (@Gard the l-theanine in green tea is the part that smooths out the caffeine but some people can have opposite reaction, I have read reports of l-theanine stopping benzo withdrawals dead in some individuals!). I was out for a few hours but feel groggy and eyes are stinging. Brain was just in survival/problem-solving mode and wouldn't disengage. It needs to feel the threat is resolving.... More on that today.

If that doesn't work for you, try something else. Keep trying until you find something that works.

My insomnia is tied into my sleep apnea, because I wake up several times throughout the night and don't really get restorative sleep. Now I finally have a CPAP, so I'm hoping that gets easier with continued usage and finally makes me feel well-rested.

Had a bit of sleep last night. I try to be grateful that I am not having the complete 100% insomnia that I have had in the past. I'm getting snatches, I go hypnagogic when I get in bed but then snap clearly awake again, at some point I will get a few hours then wake up very early.
