Hi all, sorry for this, I may be tired, and slightly drunk, but I decided that a Jim's cafe is important. It isnt just some thread where some self-absorbed twat (me) asks questions and lordes his google-gotten knowledge over everyone, it is an important venue for people to talk and get to know each other, to talk about random nothings or sometimes random somethings and come together. It is one of the things that make sus a community and not just a forum, so here it is. Jim's Cafe on alcohol

Fun Facts:
1) It takes a minimum of 6 minutes for your brain to begin to react to alcohol, so no matter what you drank, you have a minimum of 6 minutes of sobriety after the first sip.
2) The only person permitted to drink alcohol in the British Parliament is the Chancellor when delivering the annual budget statement.
3) A Gin and tonic will glow under UV light because the tonic contains Quinines which react to UV light.
4) It is REALLY hard to type coherently whilst drunk.

I have a condition relating to consuming alcohol, as in redding face and dizziness despite being sober and aware after half a cup. Also, higher chance to develop cancer compared to others. Heck, ciders do the same thing to me.

- She is great at cooking, quite more into social media (Facebook) than me. She can be quite extroverted, loud, demanding and not quite understanding.

What is one really good thing you can say about your mother? - She is caring.

- Mothers' Day is a not popular concept in my country. There are her birthday, International and National Woman Day, when I can find her something not too fancy or expensive, like a bouquet of roses.

- I once spent 30 minutes to get my bike working while being drunk and sleepy, another 2 hours just sit around to lower my alcohol level to be safe enough to drive home because I couldn't lift my own bike or properly tell the traffic lights and other people. It's all after half a cup of beer.

What is your favourite drink? - Matcha latte.
What is the most expensive/rarest drink you have ever tasted, was it any good? - A glass of local wine, its alcohol content is low enough for proper conversation and walking.

Have you been to an alcohol related event? Tell us about it. - No, not really, besides some casual meetings with friends.
Name one mistake you made whilst drunk. - Fortunately, no severe mistake was made. Well, couple of falls while walking.

- Pi, an apple, is asked to find the pint of juice on the zenith of a pine tree. (I don't know what I'm typing anymore)

How do you fare about maths, are you a mathematician or does it fill you with dread?
- Well, I work in IT so maths is a common sight and I'm used to it.

What is your favourite thing about maths (theory, strange quirk, the logic driven nature of it, anything).
- You can draw stuff by graphing a function, like a heart.

Teaching time. Teach us any maths tricks you learned that makes it easier.
- In calculating with large numbers, remember to split them smaller and group them into tens (since most of us is used to decimal numbers, not binary ones like our machines). This can be useful in budgeting.

Ex: 5782+1276 = (5000 + 1000) + (700+200) + (80+70) + (2+6) = 6000 + (900 + 150) + 8 = 6000 + 1000 + 50 + 8 = 7058

One of the few people I would tell her that I loved her and even with diminished emotions could be at least honest.

She was a Texas farm gal who one of her chores was milking the cows and she was afraid of cows. She did know how to hunt, fish and could then dress and skin and cook whatever.

3) What is one really good thing you can say about your mother?

Like her whole family she had no time for frivolity and did not suffer fools well. They all passed that trait on to me.

4) Did you wish her mothers day, or do you usually when it comes around?

Every year. Me and my brother both, like her birthday to her just another day. It meant to us.

None but while drunk I slowed down and got to lazy to have good stories.

2) What is your favourite drink?

Beer is good, free beer is better. For harder drinks bourbon and Drambuie and Cointreau I like at times, but being diabetic all are time to time treats. I like that my diabetes is controlled well enough I can have it anytime but my hard drinking days are long in my past.

3) What is the most expensive/rarest drink you have ever tasted, was it any good?

Nothing too expensive here, cheap is good and will give a buzz.

None other than parties and weddings and the like.

5) Name one mistake you made whilst drunk.

Just one? LOL. Too many when I was young and even more stupid far more than I am now. I did watch one of the guys I grew up with decide riding a 300 pound or so wild hog would be fun, then he could not figure a way to get off without being gored to death. Now me and my cousins would get buzzed and play around with blasting caps when we were teens. Surprised we grew up without stumps at the ends of our arms.

Although I like and enjoy math and most sciences no really fun or interesting stories.

1. I don't remember. Been told numerous versions of one story, but none of them can be true because I would definitely remember the details of an incident like what's been described to me by numerous eye witnesses. Right?

2. I don't remember. A beverage I was drinking at a Christmas party, but for some reason I can't recall what it was.

3. I don't remember. I think it was delicious, otherwise I wouldn't have been drinking it, right?

4. I don't remember. Maybe? Something involving a Led-Zeppelin cover-band at a...place in...Chicago? Wait, I never saw a Led-Zeppelin cover-band...did I?

5. I don't remember. Unless I'm mistaking The Rolling Stones for a Led-Zeppelin cover-band? Okay, then it was in Chicago, Soldier Field, their Voodoo Lounge Tour. Or was that the time I saw The Grateful Dead? Or was it Wisconsin, when I saw Pearl Jam? No, it was Aerosmith, I kept thinking Steven Tyler was Mick Jagger, and kept shouting for them to play "Happy." No, wait. It actually was The Rolling Stones because I remember the song "Shattered" took on a whole new meaning for me that night. Have no idea what happened after that. Until I woke up the next morning in the backseat of my car in the parking lot of the grocery store I was working at at the time. Have no clue how I ended up there.

1) What is your best alcohol-related story?
There are so many but the best ones were always while traveling. Once in Venezuela, we got back to civilization from this place in the middle of the jungle where of course there were no shops to buy alcohol. We were 6 people from different countries and we still had 350 km to go in the back of an old jeep. The poor driver had to stop at every kiosk by the road where we bought 24 pack beer every time, and listen to our international drunk ‘singing’. I totally lost my voice for three days.

2) What is your favourite drink?
Wine with food, beer if it’s hot and Cuba Libre if I wanna get nicely drunk.

3) What is the most expensive/rarest drink you have ever tasted, was it any good?
I don’t know about the most expensive, maybe Courvoisier or Champagne with gold flakes, it’s all overrated bs anyway. The rarest was probably a palm wine in Indonesia, it was the only alcohol we could get and it was so gross I couldn’t drink it…which tells it all I guess.

4) Have you been to an alcohol related event? Tell us about it.
Every party I've ever been to was alcohol related. I really like traditional new wine celebrations that involve unlimited tasting.

It's mother's day so I'm definitely answering these questions

1) Do you like your mother? Like her? That's an understatement, I LOVE her. 💓💌💟🌹🌹

2) Tell us about your mother. She is simply amazing, she would do anything for her children, she's literally a shining example to us all. Hard working, nurturing, loyal, sincere, very polite, a great cook, very calm and generous. I will give you an example actually, one particular one comes to mind, there was a man in a fast food place 2-3 years ago and he was having a panic attack, he realised he had lost his wallet in a taxi and it was late at night and he couldn't get back to the capital, he was freaking out at the thoughts of having to stay on the streets for the night as he had no cash on him to get a bus to the capital, she talked with him for an hour calmed him down and gave him the fare for the bus and gave him extra in case he needed a drink or food etc... he wanted her number to pay her back but she told him there was no need, as I said, a shining example to us all

3) What is one really good thing you can say about your mother? She has always stood by me, no matter what, literally. She is over protective, that can sometimes have a few pro's


4) Did you wish her mothers day, or do you usually when it comes around? I am waiting for her to get out of bed to give her a card and some gifts ❣💓🥰

Personally I really struggle with Mother’s Day. I have three children of my own but Mother’s Day when I was a child are filled with memories of anxiety and upset, often watching my mum delve into weeks of depression and often spending the day itself crying. At the time I did not know why or understand, other than my dad telling us that she was unwell. As a result I find Mother’s Day difficult although she is slightly better about it than she was. My own children do not celebrate it. Probably because they know I find it difficult. I don’t like anything which draws attention to me, so birthdays are the same. I’d rather ignore the day.

Do you like your mother?
Interesting question. Sometimes. But I do love my mother, she’s my mother. But she has had a difficult life and been through a lot. That impacted a lot while I was growing up and has meant life was challenging and has caused me and my brother and sister mental health issues which unfortunately keep coming back to our upbringing.

2) Tell us about your mother.
I don’t blame my mother. I blame society and her parents, but I don’t blame them either, it was what it was like then. I know I’m being cryptic, unmarried mothers were frowned upon in those days and disgraced the family. The damage it caused was huge and still effects a lot of people to this day. She suffers from mental health issues and has done for as long as I can remember. But my mum loves us and that’s all that matters.

3) What is one really good thing you can say about your mother?
She tries her best to do what she thinks is right, even if it’s not always the best choice.
4) Did you wish her mothers day, or do you usually when it comes around?
I do. I am not with her today because of Covid restrictions but I have sent her gifts and flowers and phoned her today. It is important to make sure that she knows I love her.

Happy Mother’s Day to everyone who is celebrating today and I hope you are spoiled and enjoy the love you receive. Xx

I miss my mother so very much. She died in 1986 of lung cancer. She was only 62.
2) Tell us about your mother.
My mother was a fantastic cook. She loved her family very much. I will always remember the 4th of July when she painted our patio green. She did it her stocking feet. The stockings did not survive. She loved getting dressed up and going for dinner and dancing. Could not afford to do it very often.
3) What is one really good thing you can say about your mother?
She loved us.
4) Did you wish her mothers day, or do you usually when it comes around?
I have pictures of her and my dad around the house. I think of them both. And it does not have to be mothers day or fathers day for that to happen.

Let you parents know you love them now. For they will be gone before you know it.

I love her? As much as I hate to admit this... I find it hard to like her though, as we do not understand each other at all.

2) Tell us about your mother.
She's the opposite of me in practically all the ways. She got the wrong daughter.

3) What is one really good thing you can say about your mother?
She's very hard-working and the best at what she does (she's an accountant). She always finds the best solution for her clients.

4) Did you wish her mothers day, or do you usually when it comes around?
I usually don't celebrate it, no. I might wish it to her if someone reminds me it's Mother's Day.

1) What is your best alcohol-related story?
A story for a story.

2) What is your favourite drink?
I don't know, there's too many, and I can't compare beers to spirits to cocktails...

3) What is the most expensive/rarest drink you have ever tasted, was it any good?
Probably that cocktail I had last Summer. It was based on red wine (which I find unusual for cocktails), I don't remember the other ingredients, but it was really really great. It was more expensive than usual, but nothing too crazy.

4) Have you been to an alcohol related event? Tell us about it.
We have beer festivals all the time in my city center, but the one that comes to my mind happens every year in my student city. It's a HUGE thing, the second largest "beer event" in Europe after the Oktoberfest. Now, officially, it is a "24-hour bicycle relay race" organized by students, lol. In reality, about 50 000 students from my country and abroad gather around concerts on every square, activities, parties, games... And they drink lots, eh. The number of bikes riding decreases exponentially with time, haha. It's pretty much impossible not to take part in it if you live there, so I have some fun memories from it. Here's a video (click) from my times.

Shut up, I've never made any mistake while drunk.

1) What is your best alcohol-related story?
Avoiding any stories which are overly "player" or anything, my best alcohol related story is more silly than crazy.
It was my birthday which is usually rubbish so I made an extra effort to try to make this one fun, just to see if I still could, I planned months in advance and let everyone know.
Everyone arrived, as instructed, in their best finery; ball gowns, suits with waistcoats, etc, I eve had a top hat, and we had a lovely meal, then had some drinks at a bar and went to play tipsy lazer-tag in suits and ball gowns. It was brilliantly silly and we all had a lot of fun, then we finished off the evening wandering around the pubs and clubs drinking, dancing and being merry whilst being WAY overdressed wherever we went.

2) What is your favourite drink?
It was this cocktail in a bar I found at university that they unfortunately don't make anymore called the "Spider" it was a mix of half a dozen gins and rums topped off with Coke, it tasted strangely like vanilla coke and went down very easily. It was kinda the barman's doing rather than something the pub officially did, so it went when he did.

3) What is the most expensive/rarest drink you have ever tasted, was it any good?
Two come to mind, both Scotch Whiskey.
The first is a bottle of 20 year old cask strength Douglas Laing's XOP I bought for my dad on fathers day, it set me back around £120 and was pretty nice. The bottle went down very well, well enough that he made it last and even after he finished it, he kept the bottle.
The second was a bottle of 60 year old Gordon & MacPhail Strathisla which my Aunt bought my dad for his 60th birthday, it costs anywhere between £1000 and £3000, not sure which considering she didnt say but it didnt taste so good. My dad shared a small class with me, but it just tasted of wood and smoke to me, but he enjoyed it. He has 1 tiny glass every year on his birthday and plans to have the last of it on his deathbed. (it was put in the cask the year he was born, so he thinks it should be finished when he dies) I also forbade him from sharing any more with me as the little amount I drank probably cost more than most supermarket bottles and it shouldn't be wasted on someone who cant appreciate it.

4) Have you been to an alcohol related event? Tell us about it.
Nope. No alcohol related events I am afraid, the closest I ever came was a tour around Shepherd Neame brewery followed by a tasting. It was an interesting tour and some very fine beer.

I have more about science or engineering, not specifically maths, I'll see if I find some...

2) How do you fare about maths, are you a mathematician or does it fill you with dread?
I love it, it's always been the easiest and most fun subject for me (ok, except Latin perhaps). Nothing makes more sense than maths.

3) What is your favourite thing about maths (theory, strange quirk, the logic driven nature of it, anything).
I think it's one of the most beautiful things about the universe and how we describe it. Theories amaze me, proving them feels extremely powerful, and I don't understand how applying them to the world around us doesn't fill everyone with pure awe. I also think maths teaches about every aspect of the world, not just some numbers and equations, but teachers don't take the time to inspire and students aren't curious enough.

I don't, but this one was funny and I thought would annoy the mathematicians out there. *whistles*

Only a slight exaggeration there, but that's how engineering feels.

Well I guess the rarest drink was when I made a glass of vodka, filled with lemon candy and let it ferment for a day. It smelled and tasted like hand sanitizer, never again
