I really like that name a lot. I sense that possibly "Sam" is some semblance of your dead name maybe. You know what, man? You're 17 and about to head out soon. You can change your name for any reason or no reason in any state in this country so go for it. It's cheap and relatively easy. The parents will actually look like dicks if the entire world is calling you Ashton and they're walking around oddly calling you some other name so they'll get in line or look like idiots. @A.Generic.sam
(also notable though is that having a generic name is a thing.. When I picked my name I chose the name I was going to be named but decided on some moronic spelling which was not a great idea. So you can get clocked by having something unique that isn't targeted by the time period you were born, you know? A name that doesn't fit the time period or whatever.)

I would love to change it back to Ashton but all my friends and family have already switched the name they use for me twice, I don’t want to make it confusing. I don’t HATE the name Sam, and I’m so used to being called it by now. Like I said, not a bad name, just generic. Thank you though

I was dumb in picking my name. I won't say it publicly (you can PM me if you're curious) because it's fairly uncommon and I don't want to be easily identifiable, but it also sounds a lot like a much more common name, so people always get my name mixed up. If I could have a do-over, I'd probably pick a different one, but I kinda like it too.
