One of the first CDs I ever bought myself

Forgot to mention in my previous reply but it's really cool that you remember this. I remember buying my first album, it's certainly addictive, though I haven't bought one since Hexed a few days after it was released.

Noticing a pretty severe lack of Nevermore here, I'll just drop one of my favorite songs here. I, voyager. because who doesn't love incredible lyrics, crushing riffs, and 6 string sweeping solo?

I swear Metallica always writes the best interludes for their instrumentals. But this is overshadowed by their other instrumental compositions. Not my favorite but wow.

I love the song Essence by Dreariness very much, and the MV is soo beautiful. That's a (blackgaze?) band with a female vocalist.
And I also want to share the song Quoth the Raven by Eluveitie. and Tragedienne by Sirenia.
That's quite a lot...

(I guess blackgaze can be explained as a genre with the influences of black metal and shoegaze, or post-rock. And that's not very "metal" I think, but sometimes it can be heavy enough.)

Sometimes a metal band makes some songs that not heavy at all, somehow I was shocked by In This Moment's Into the Light. Too beautiful, the melody and lyrics...but I know that's not metal at all.
I'm listening to Deafheaven right now. This band is soooo great...it's almost the most famous post-black metal band I guess (except Alcest?)
(2 minutes later) I'm now listening to Traeumen von Aurora's Reflektionen. OMG I love it and so beautiful the lyrics are!!! (I know they're in German and I only know a little about German, but thanks to the translate)
Oh dear! it seems too much...I'm just so excited haha. And those are only my thoughts.

Absolutely. I mean none of Iron Maidens songs are particularly heavy but they're still one of the best metal bands of all time. And often the less heavy/slower songs stand out more.

Does anybody have any reccomendations for black metal bands that are musically interesting? I enjoy Burzum and Mayhem on occasion but musically it's fairly boring. The only one I can think of is Dissection, though I've only listened to one album from them.

Well I only know Alcest from the ones you mentioned, so maybe they are the most famous. :P But I don't know this genre much so I'm no reference.

Oh I mean the song Into the Light. This song isn't heavy, but it's soo impressive. In this Moment is a metal band haha, Their newest album sounds a bit "pop" (a lot of comments said that), but I still love it. Especially the cover version of "In the air tonight".
