All of those are short term, nothing can help how I'll always feel about my pointless existence.

Talking to a certain someone, quite often just talking to anyone. Not even talking as in letting stuff out, talking as in literally just having company. Even if it's only some text on a screen, it makes me just that little bit more sane!

came off my anti-depressants a few days ago... but now i've noticed that when i get nervous, angry or sad i tend to rock back and forth, it comforts me a lot but also makes people notice me and they are starting to comment on it and giving me a few weird looks :/

sleep and eating comforting food. Those are the two things that make me feel better. Being with, or speaking with, people also helps. But that is not an option.

Well I've been hiding the fact that I depressed for a long time now. So the things that have been helping me get through the days are:
*Video games sometime help, but sometimes they can make it even worse.
*Jamison Irish Whiskey, not to be taken in excess, but the smooth taste of it along with the warm sensation it leaves behind really helps me calm down at night.
*My children when there asleep, the few times that they take a nap at the same time leaving the house quiet for at least 30 min, that's the best
*My wife, when she's at home, and we get to spend time together
*At one time the military was a major encouragement to me, but now that I'm being forced out it makes me down thinking about it.

Well those are the biggest things that I can think of off the top of my head...

what makes me feel better i agree with souldier... some alcool help but that is a short live relief.
a warm welcome that you feel sincere online as on life none will greet me, i moved away few
months ago so not having made friends but a few acquitance. a phone call even just to say
hello, how you doing today? simple things gets a whole room in an empty space. dont need
much to make my day as you can see, simpliest things hae a whole value.

soldier if you are forced out, perhaps focussing on what you will do, something you would really
enjoy doing once out of there? a new carreer, perhaps take a course of some sort? wishing you
the best.

Mountain climbing, writing in a journal, writing here, helping others and turning some frown into anger and destroying small boulders with a pickaxe.

Edit: I love when someone asks me if I'm alright, I tell them I'm fine but the concern still makes me feel great.
