I just don't know any more. Life is just constantly gaslighting me. Like today, someone at work basically started arguing that black is actually red (not literally, just challenging an accepted fact). Found myself questioning my sanity. So something I've been doing and telling people for 10 years and has never been questioned in that time isn't actually done that way? The trouble is this has been passed to higher ups and I fully expect them to come back and side with this person. My life is fucking ridiculous.
That's not life gaslighting you, it's an organization with some less than healthy people making it up. I know it's hard to see this when it's happening, because I frequently question my sanity, especially when a peer disagrees with me. Over time, though, I have learned that the person most confident in their own opinion, is also the most likely to be factually wrong, and/or unaware of their own logical missteps in forming that opinion. I guess that's similar to the Dunning-Kruger effect but on the farther side. The more expert we get, the more aware we are that we don't have any business proclaiming anything that we cannot back up with citations if appropriate.
By the same token, the loudest, most self assured voice in the room is almost always the least informed and the least effective at whatever skill they are claiming. I submit as a case study and a supreme example of this phenomenon, a certain political figure, who need not be named because being certain and wrong at the same time is this figure's trademark. There are less severe examples in my own history.
I also know that higher ups are more sensitive to political manipulation (aka ego-stroking or making them look good to their superiors) than to technical expertise. I do not doubt your assessment that they will fail as decent arbiters of the truth of the matter, however I disagree that you should doubt yourself as a result of those idiots. It's not your problem, it's just organizational dysfunction. IMHO, of course!
