Unfortunately for me I have joined Team Insomniac. Which is weird because 1 I haven’t had this happen to me in over 15 years and 2 I am exercising more than usual. But it is midnight and I’m still wide awake. Not even racing thoughts just wide awake. It maybe the epidural didn’t fix my pain as I would love to be asleep and free of pain for a couple of hours. I could take a sleeping pill but I don’t want to get addicted again to them. The worst thing that could happen is for me to sleep late in the morning.

Sorry you can't sleep. I haven't been sleeping much for a long time now. Whether it's related or not, my kidneys decide to retain water from later afternoon until bedtime, and then decide to flush my system overnight. So far changing what I drink and when has not had any effect. It's not a typical middle aged man thing, it's actual volume - nowhere near enough to be of concern, it matches my intake and not leading to thirst etc, it's just all coming out at the wrong time 🫨

I hope you get some sleep and keep the pain managed @cymbele

I’ve still been having horrific trouble sleeping. As I believe I said on a post elsewhere on the site, it started getting worse when I had some kind of respiratory virus at the beginning of July. Since then, I basically always wake up in the middle of my sleep, and sometimes I also have trouble sleeping and lie there for hours. I do have sleep apnea and have been too scared to use a CPAP, but this is a sudden change that I don’t think boils down to only my sleep apnea.

I’ve been trying to fix a few unhealthy habits, like staying in bed with my laptop while I’m awake, and my psychiatrist prescribed me trazodone, which only seems to work sometimes. Something that makes it difficult is that I work night shifts, so I hear the sounds of everyone else in my building going about their days, plus it’s light out. The building’s laundry room is right behind my bedroom, so that can get loud sometimes.

I really like to go out to the pub to watch Tottenham matches with my local supporters club, but a lot of the scheduled times for eastern US are not great for night shifters. A lot of them are at 12:30 PM, which is kinda late for me to stay awake the whole match but not really enough time for me to go home and sleep before I have to catch the bus to the pub. I’m not sure if I’ll be able to go tomorrow (one of the dreaded 12:30 matches) even though it’s their first match of the season, just because I got so little sleep today and am worried about getting sick.

Sorry to hear this @Baywasp
my first thought, after hearing about a respiratoy virus is the sensation of difficulty breathing. real or not, a fan blowing on your face at sleeptime, can help decrease that sensation. the sound of the fan could help muffle the day time noises. Win-win.
any questions on CPAP that could help to reduce fear? you might find that a restful sleep while breathing helps reduce other problems.
if all else fails, I can call you and talk about my life…. A guaranteed nap! Lol.
But, fr - I hope you get some rest soon.

Thank you. That makes sense about the fan. I am constantly finding myself thinking about my breathing when trying to sleep since that sickness. No specific questions regarding the CPAP. The thought of it just makes me nervous, and I am worried about it being limiting. Like I know that once I start using it, I will be someone who “needs a CPAP” so I would need to bring it anywhere I planned to sleep. I’m especially concerned about traveling because those machines are pretty big, and I like to travel light. If any of that makes sense lol

Last night I had to get up at some point, I avoided looking at the clock. My throat was sore and seemed to have thickened. I made some warm salty water, swished it around and gargled. It made me feel a lot better and I went to sleep again. Thank you to my cool little grandma ( gone for many years now) for teaching me that a loong time ago.
It’s such a simple thing that really has effect. Glad you went back to sleep

I get the travel light thing. I was surprised that my son takes his back & forth to work. (He does 24 hour shifts). My partner never takes it for an overnight trip anymore. There are travel size machines, even rechargeable ones, but idk anyone that’s used one.

I hope everyone rests well tonight.

Sorry to be late to this discussions, but as a CPAP user I wanted to give some thoughts.

As far as travel, the regular CPAP is about the size of a rectangular tissue box and is lightweight. There are also even smaller models specifically for travel.

I felt quite constricted at first and it took a long time to get used to the machine, but I am glad I have it now, and my sleep is so much more restful.

Don't know if any of this is helpful, but thought I'd throw it out there.
