Yeah, I didn't have such modules at university unfortunately as Maths wasn't my major. My maths courses were called Mathematics 1, 2 and 3, lol. And frankly, it tended towards mathematical engineering more and more with each one, no pure maths anymore. *blue

Isn't that something you had to prove in high school when learning about limits?
Im sorry you were robbed of Pure maths, I always suffered more with applied maths than pure.

Yes, but in my first year of university we also proved that 2 is bigger than 1 and learned how to count, you do end up touching on things you did already, but the burden of proof is SO much heavier, you REALLY have to prove it. Can you imagine trying to prove mathematically and conclusively that 2 is ALWAYS bigger than 1? I mean of COURSE it is but how do yo even BEGIN proving it?

It's ok, it was only the beginning of a long series of disappointments. :D I definitely suffered with it more too.

Damn, I'm interested in that proof. Unfortunately I haven't proved anything since high school so I can't even think of the different methods to go about it. ^^

*hug More disappointments means more worry.... Its an equivalence relation. :)

Trust me, it is one of the many memories lost to depression haze, I only remember THAT we learned a proof, not what it was :P

I don't want to pick mine, but I do think French is a very unique and beautiful language. :D I wish I could hear it from an outsider's point of view, without understanding it.
I do pretty much understand it if you don't speak too fast, even more if it's written, but I have this weird thing about it. French is the only language I can't decide whether to love it or hate it. I honestly can't explain the feeling.

Welcome one and all to Jim's Cafe! A little less going rogue and a little more "topics of the day" this time, so lets see what day it is today:
1) "World Wildlife Day"
2) "What if Cats and Dogs had Opposable Thumbs day"
3) "National Anthem Day"
4) "Registered Dietitian Day"
5) "Canadian Bacon Day"
6) "International Irish Whiskey Day",
7) "World Maths Day"
8) "Cold Cuts Day"
9) "Mulled Wine Day"

So what shall we do with these topics? Well, By Mixing 3, 5 and 6 we get the "National Appreciation Table", next, Lets mix 1 and 2 for the "Animal Lover's Table", and finally, The recruitment table, Oh and a little something extra hidden at the back... I really wanted to do a maths table, but I couldn't think of any good questions, I suppose that's what happens when you neglect sleep... so instead, an open invitation to anyone who wants to teach us Maths or talk about any of the other days above if it moves you. :)

So Pick your table and feast yourself on the topics at hand :D but first:

Fun Facts
Did you know:
1) If you are drinking Champaign from a place other than a very specific town in France, its not actually Champaign, it is Sparkling Wine. Champaign is a sparkling wine named for the specific region in France in which it is made.
2) North Korea and Cuba are apparently the only countries in the world where you cant by Coca Cola.
3) The Canary Islands were named after Dogs, not Birds. The name "Canary Islands" comes from the Italian name "Islas Canarias" which itself comes from the Latin "Canariae Insulae" meaning "Island of Dogs".
4) Australia boasts possibly the lonest place name in the world with the little town of "Mamungkukumpurangkuntjunya Hill".
5) 1 Billion used to mean "1million millions", as defined in the 16th century, but in recent decades the American Billion "1thousand millions" gained such popularity that other countries began to cave.

National Appreciation Table
A Table for us all to get warm and fuzzy about those strange concepts of "you cant come here, we claimed this bit".

4) What country have you always wanted to visit and why?
5) Which country has the best Language / Accent? (You can choose your own, and you can choose any regional language/accent of any country)
6) What does your country mean to you?

Sometimes, I wonder how do you know what day is today? I mean I don't even remember my own age, 25 or 23? I like your facts. Well, that's quite unrelated altogether.

Nacional Appretiasion Desk
Which country are you from? - Vietnam.

What is your favourite thing about your country?
- The fact that the fast food from McDonald or Burger King is not as fast as the food made by a street food vendor.

If I were stuck in your country for a week, where is 1 place I would absolutely have to visit? Or alternatively 1 activity I MUST do?
- As long as you wear a mask outside and regularly wash your hands, you would be fine to travel everywhere in the country, from the pine forests of Da Lat to the beaches of Nha Trang. The country is well-known for its cuisine (pho, banh mi, etc.) so make sure to try local foods.

What country have you always wanted to visit and why?
- Every single one because why not.

Which country has the best Language / Accent? (You can choose your own, and you can choose any regional language/accent of any country)

- I think every language and accent is the best in their own term.

What does your country mean to you?
- A large family of people living together in a piece of land, building a culture and writing history about themselves.

I have a cat avatar, downloaded from Pexels. Definitely not my cat.
For all those pet owners, tell us something unusual about your pet, odd habits, unexpected abilities, escape attempts anything.
- I don't have a pet so let me talk about myself. I have a habit of postponing tasks, an ability to procrastinate the entire day and many attempts to escape work. Pretty unusual to many other humans, I'd say.

Tell us about what it takes to take care of your pet?
- I don't have a pet so let me talk about myself. It may take a day, maybe more for me to get back to work like usual. During that day, it's mostly video games, Youtube educational videos (often called them "short documentaries) or wandering around. The human is not productive or useful, perhaps quite expensive to take care of.

What aspect of which animal do you REALLY envy?
- They don't have to work and live for money.

Have you ever got the chance to work with wild animals, if so, tell us a story, if not, would you if you could?
- Unfortunately, no, I'd love to.

Tell us Why you love animals, just go nuts :D
- The fluffiness of the furs and feathers.

Da Rekruitment Tabl'
I cannot really volunteer, maybe not this month or the next. Work sucks sometimes. Maybe I'm just too lazy for a thread like this. Is today 31st of February?

The Filosofi Bonker
- I don't enjoy answering philosophical questions. I've seen political and life issues being discussed into endless cycles of condemnations (and swearing).

Same in the u.s. !! Lol should be called crap food not fast food (well, at least here)

I also think this even though I have favorites. Languages from any culture is incredibly amazing.

I am a little late but have been wanting to answer these:

National Appreciation Table:
1. I am from the US
2. I love the diversity of the land and of the people. Even with people I sometimes ideologically do not agree with (sometimes).
3. I believe everyone should go to New York City. I know it's not for everyone, but there's nothing quite like it in the world. It's my favorite place, bar none. Eat some pizza while you're there!
4. I want to go to the Swiss Alps more than anything in the world
5. I go to the UK often and love the accents in England. I'm getting good and detecting regional accents now too. It's a stereotype, but everyone sounds so amazing. I have a friend whose accent is so thick (Midlands) I have to sometimes think about what he said to figure out the words. I could listen to him for hours (and do sometimes). Also he has a nice laugh. The people of England are very warm.
6. I haven't thought much about the US in the last few years in any kind of positive way. Too much division and anger. But I do think the US is a place for real opportunity in weird ways. Like, there's a great big arts community and while it's hard to get into it, there's a creative vibe here that I like quite a bit.

Animal lovers table:

1. I currently have 2 pet rats. They aren't so odd for rats, but one of them loves to chew on his hands when he's nervous. I always have to intervene. The way he pulls on his little fingers upsets me. Also, he can't really close his eyes, because they bulge so he sleeps with them open!
2. Rats are easy to care for. They just want snacks and some love. Also, a good cage cleaning once a week. You get so much love in return.
3. I don't know that I envy any animal except when I had cats (and I'm currently in the process of adopting one now) I was mad when they got to stay home as I went to work! I also think birds are amazing and love to watch them fly.
4. This is not meant to put anyone off, but I'm sort of a tree hugging vegetarian, and I don't believe that people should mix with wild animals. I don't even go to zoos, even though I don't think they are necessarily a bad thing, but I believe animals deserve their habitats as is. We can work around it. So, no, while I'd love to be near some wild animals because they are so beautiful. i do not believe that's right.
5. I love animals because they are beautiful and because I think they are more elevated in a way. They don't get caught up in the same minutia of living that humans do. For those that are free, they are truly free. All creatures have a majesty and I love all animals.

I currently have 2 pet rats.
Have you ever posted pictures of them on this site? Rats are so cute. I used to have 3 but had to give them back to the rescue where I had adopted them from as I was having trouble taking care of them due to anxiety/depression and money. I loved them but also knew that they'd have a better life with someone else. I'm still in Facebook rat groups and live vicariously through other people now.

I have not posted a pic. Here you go. They are such sweethearts. I hope you can get into a space to have a couple of pets again. It must have been hard giving them back, but so good of you to try to help them have a better life. Mine are sleeping right now, and probably hoping for a treat! haha

Adorable! Thanks for sharing. All 3 of mine were black and white hoodeds. They looked similar to each other, but one had all black on his face, one had white on the right side of his face, and the last one had white on the left side of his face. I might have posted them on one of the old pet picture threads, but I'm not sure.

They sound so cute! I think rats are just the sweetest pets. I got my first one a while back when my cat died. She loved to go everywhere with me, so I took her to parties and even once to a work meeting because everyone wanted to meet her. Since then I've only had them sporadically because they don't live that long. But the love you get in that short time... worth it.

That is cute pair of rat pets. I have known a few that had them as pets and say that they can be quite affectionate and with their enclosures they are neat and clean pets.
