I feel like a total piece of shit because I’ve turned to drink to try and make myself feel better. I keep trying to connect with people but it never works out in the end because I don’t know who I am without this mask on

I know that struggle all too well. I just got out of the hospital 2 weeks ago after a week long coma, managed to give myself serotonin syndrome. Basically from ODing. I don't really LIKE blaming bpd for everything but it IS the reason for a lot of negatives in our lives. So I know it's hard but try to give yourself a break, it's not entirely your fault, and I'm pretty sure everyone here, at least the regulars I've interacted with, are pretty familiar with substance use and addiction. We're here for you :)

That doesn't make you a bad person. It's just another way we tend to cope with overwhelming feelings. I've done it plenty of times myself, so I get it.

Thanks @Witty⭐️Sarcasm🐒 and @Gwyrdd, I’m so sorry to hear you’ve been going through all that recently. I just drank too much last night and probably made an ass of myself. I’ve been telling myself that I don’t have a problem with drink but I do so I guess it’s just another thing to address.
I'm one of those "stereotypical" addicts unfortunately. Fully aware of the danger but still wanting to do it. So trust me, you have nothing to be ashamed of. I personally want to believe I don't either but thats hard to do so I understand your feelings.

Just stay as safe as you can and do what you have to to feel better. I know advocating substance use isn't great, and honestly may actually be against the rules, but if you need to drink to feel good right now, just stay safe, and make sure you aren't overdoing it.

We shouldn’t be ashamed but yeah you’re right, it’s hard to do. It feels so simple: “avoid alcohol because it makes you feel worse” but it’s obviously turned in to a coping mechanism at some point in my life. I guess this is what recovery is all about, picking it all apart and I guess that thought is very daunting to me which is why I want to drink. I’m about to start a 2 year structured clinical management course and I’m fucking scared.
I mean, I came on here and started talking shit on chat whilst drunk which I know isn’t really allowed but I’m pretty sure I behaved myself because I wasn’t thrown out or anything.
And thanks btw @Gwyrdd, you’re amazing :)

Don't feel bad, I make an ass out of myself whether drunk or sober :D

Does anyone know how to deal with nhs waiting times. I have over a month and a half to wait until I get help and they have basically abandoned me.
A month and a half For an assessment or till therapy?
Honestly that IS the NHS. Depending on how old you are there are a lot of charities for young adults and MIND can be really helpful too. There are also charities for community engagement no matter the age.

mutt

usually just talk in the chat rooms
i think i might have bpd or at least another type of personality disorder. i’m worried about this and am going to discuss it with a psychiatrist. how do you deal with a possible diagnosis? i just want to feel less alone

Well, there is a lot of stigma attached to BPD, as you are probably aware. But for me personally, I was relieved to finally have a grasp on what was wrong. If you do have BPD the most effective treatment is still (as far as I know) DBT, which is usually done in groups most of the time. That helped me enormously. Not just the therapy, but being around others with similar problems. And there is always SF 👍👍

Like pebble mouse said, I felt relieved to have the diagnosis because I felt like having a name for this thing that has plagued me nearly all my life could help me understand it better. Also, definitely speaking with others who experience similar issues as mine has been really helpful. I’ve never been able to speak to anyone about things like this before because I feel like they aren’t going to understand me. Plus, it’s not something that’s fully accepted in society to respond to "how are you?" with "I’m really suicidal actually, how are you?". So when I speak to other people with bpd or similar issues to me, I feel much less alone in all that crap that comes with it such as the suicidal ideations, mood swings, SH, etc, etc. I hope you can get some answers that will help :)
