• IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT: Please read THIS THREAD about a rebrand for SF.

I think I'm going to die.

I read your thread and feel for you in this situation. I get angry when I see you and others being treated in this way when you may not have many options and no one needs this on their mind constantly. I understand thoughts that keep pointing to the end and how torturous they can be, creating hopeless feelings. Nobody should ever have to feel like this IMO especially just trying to live their life with loved ones or pets. I hope the best for you and wish you well.

Thank you.

I have reviewed the statutes regarding eviction, and I am pretty sure that I will be kicked out at the end of July. The court does not care if its a hardship or if you are elderly or disabled. This isn't about the rent - its about the dog. When I suggested remedies regarding my dog in April, they shut me down. They don't want him on the property.

I'm not going to abanon him or kill him. Its out of the question.

So it looks like my only choice is to either 1) find a place that will take me before I am kicked out or 2) move all my stuff into storage and live in a hotel until I can find permanent housing. This will be exhausting, inconvenient, and expensive. I don't want to be in danger. I don't really want to die, but I can't live with this extreme stress forever.

Just checking in... I'm packing up my apartment. Its hot and buggy here.

So as far as I know the landlord is going to file to evict me at the end of the month and that will show up on public records. That could keep me from getting an apartment. As far as I know the bankruptcy will be discharged at the end of the month and that will show up on my credit report. That will make it easier to get an apartment.

The two places that I was rejected from want me to reapply when the bankruptcy is discharged. There is no guarantee when something will be available.

There are other places I am looking at. I think its likely that I will be able to find something early in August and that the actual eviction will not happen. But the fact that it will be on record might be a problem. Its a catch 22. If one of the owners wants to know why I am being evicted I might have to tell them its because of my dog... and that might be a problem.

I am trying not to get my mind twisted into knots thinking about all the whatifs.

Maybe you could strike a deal with the owners if necessary. Maybe if you haven't already, make a list of two columns, one for what has to happen and one for what would have to happen for plan B. I don't know much about being a dog-owner but, promising that when you go out to put a harness and muzzle on your dog. There might be laws dealing with tenants who are dog owners (which probably vary by country and state).

it's good to hear from you.

Still in limbo. My dog has to wear a muzzle all the time now because he has 3 reported bites. He doesn't like it, but he's getting used to it.

I have determined that there are 5-6 places in my current city where I can move to. My income is low because I've been unemployed for over a year. So I am applying for "income restricted" housing. You have to establish that you are able to afford the rent, but that your income is below a certain level. Funny thing is, the rents are so high that I will end up paying the same amount as I do now. And the thing is- there has to be something available during the first few days of August. And my bankruptcy has to be discharged by then. Sometimes the properties have 3-4 apartments available and sometimes they have none.

One of the places is actually connected to an assisted living/nursing home. It makes me feel uncomfortable, mostly because of my dog. If he nipped someone it would be all over for him. But its a nice apartment.

Its clear that I am going to have to get some kind of job but I can't think about it yet. My head is too jumbled.

I got an email from the landlord yesterday saying that I need to be out of the apartment by the end of the month or they will evict me. They asked me to confirm receiving the message. I confirmed and said that I could not be out because of the bankruptcy. They said they didn't care- I have to be out.

So I looked up the actual eviction process in my state- the first thing they do is give you a 28 day notice. If you aren't out at the end of that period, they file the eviction in court- and that is on a public record that anyone can look up. All this time I've been thinking that the public filing would happen right away. So as soon as the bankruptcy is discharged I would have the eviction on my record. That could prevent me from being approved for an apartment.

But I was wrong! The eviction wont become public until the 28 days are up. That is such a relief. I have several places that are possibilities and one of them has 4 apartments available now. So hopefully I can get in there.

Well this is strange. The landlord did not send me a 28 day notice- I should have gotten it a week ago. This gives me more time, which is a good thing. I have a feeling that it has something to do with the landlord having financial problems, and nothing to do with me. A couple of apartments around me have been empty for months and that means they are not collecting rent. I am still planning to move. This just means I am not under pressure, at least for the moment.
