Let's be honest, we all struggle with anxiety and self-doubt at times. When you find yourself continually battling negative feelings, I am sure that you searched on google for answers and you've looked for self-help books as well. Sure, they’re not an instant cure or a replacement for therapy or treatment, but books can help provide invaluable insight and suggest effective techniques for improving your mindset.

If you are going to buy a book, what would you consider before buying? What Self-help books for mental health and anxiety would you recommend?

I've never seen any self-help books about mental health in local bookstores so I cannot really recommend anything. There are only medical books that takes on mental illnesses (signs, types, treatment options and so on).

To be honest, I recommend not buying any self-help content (not just books, there are also videos, courses, personal coaching services, etc.). Those contents are often too similar to each other, though not exact copies. I think self-help has become another industry that targets people with insecurities, similar to beauty products and plastic surgery.

This is just my opinion, though, probably biased. Others often bash me with "have a growth mindset" thing whenever I talk about my constant suicidal thoughts.

This is one of like 2 self help books I got - It's about depersonalization disorder. Related to what I feel is more of an anxiety disorder as opposed to a dissociative disorder:

It helped me tremendously - Ever since I developed anxiety, I was left with many questions - Like what is the deal with all my extreme philosophical thinking, rumination and the like? How can I regain a sense of reality? Will I always feel so numb/the same? I don't practice the mindfulness techniques found in the book, that requires a lot of dedication among other things. It gives insight into like the "thinking loopholes" and "traps" - It has decent exercises too, homework if you will: "How is my disorder interfering with my life?" as a writing task and it gives more detailed information about it. The book also stimulates you to challenge your thoughts (Cognitive Behavioural Therapy techniques) and wants you to face your fears using exposure therapy methods too.

There is a book in its 2nd or 3rd edition called

Mind Over Mood

I highly recommend this one if you are just starting your journey on dealing with mental health issues.

There have been quite a few threads about self-help books. If I ever get the energy, I may make a thread that breaks down the recommended books by category.

I’d normally use app/listen to podcasts abt mental health. I don’t necessary loves book, I’d rather recovery from learning what I’ve learned. Also, I can’t believe my pdoc would make his own book too🤣 86A7163B-2E9B-4565-8D6E-F304F4CAB998.jpeg

These were always my top ones:
(Not necessarily in that order)

1. Mark Manson - The Subtle Art of Not Giving a Fuck
2. Mark Manson - Everything is Fucked: A Book About Hope
3. Daniel Kahnemann - Thinking, Fast and Slow
4. Albert Ellis - How to Stubbornly Refuse to Make Yourself Miserable About Anything--Yes, Anything!
5. Loretta Graziano Breuning - Habits of a Happy Brain

I got 3 new self-help books, will write about it here - I didn't really want to make a completely new thread. Overcoming Depersonalisation book is the same I posted before in this thread, but it's the 2nd edition and has many more pages from what I can tell. =)

Started reading "Life on Autopilot" a few days ago - it's already resonating with me. Well on that note, I'll update the thread when I get further in these 3 books! :) Later!
